Reading Kindle 2 Customer Review…

I believe I have been hearing about Reading Kindle 2 in general terms for a year or so. The only time it really became an item of interest was when I saw it on an AT&T commercial (women reclining by a pool reading their Kindles). I still did not pursue it until I saw a woman on a plane reading it.
On a whim I decided to buy it and now, if I had to choose between my Reading Kindle 2 and any other object of entertainment in my home (TV, Computer, Stereo) it will be the Reading Kindle 2. I had all but stopped reading – I became tired of looking for comfortable places to get lost in a book, of turning pages, laying the book down, changing hands, losing my place and having a multitude of books around the house that I had not yet finished – reading was becoming a thing of the past.
I’ve had my Reading Kindle 2 for 10 days….and I am on my 5th book. It goes with me from room to room. It sits on my desk at home on a specific stand so I can read occasionally while I am working (sort of the naughty break – throughout the entire day). I read while in the Kitchen. I have it with me when I am watching TV so I can continue reading while waiting through the ever lenghty, boring, repetitive commercials. I can lay it down anywhere and love not worrying if I bookmarked it or bent a spine. I ABSOLUTELY love the ability to travel with several books on one slim device that is always at the ready. I am relieved to have all of my books in one place.
I did not have the Kindle 1 so I am not able to compare however a few of the things I wish were included – some mentioned on other reviews – are:
1) Transferring books between Kindles. My sister and I read many of the same authors. I am in the Southwest; she is in the Midwest. We mail books to one another all the time as do a few of my friends dispersed around the country and in Mexico. It seem almost criminal that there is such tight control over the costs associated with this Reading Kindle 2. For her and I to have to buy the same book each is a shame. One reviewer suggested a transfer with a time allowance – good idea. On the other hand, if it were ok to transfer books between Kindles it would take no time at all for enterprisers to set up websites to sell ‘used Kindle books’. I can see no easy solution for all parties concerned – too bad.
2) There needs to be a user friendly way to organize books. I read a huge variety of genres and oftentimes look for books by type (Sci-Fi, Biography, Drama, etc.) There are many times I will open a book to read the description, buy it and never remember who the author was not to mention never really memorizing the Title of the Book.
3) The toggle button requires caution. I feel for those of you who do not have fingernails. Trying to shift the button enough to move it up/down or side/side oftentimes results in the opening of things vs the searching.
4) There are sections of magazines, newspapers, book pictures or diagrams, etc that never enlarge enough to read. Perhaps there will be a way to highlight and ‘ZOOM’ at some point…
** Personal note/downside ** Kindle sort of puts a damper on roaming a big bookstore for a couple hours. I still go but find myself buying coffee and checking the Reading Kindle 2 to find which of the books of interest they offer…I can easily see book shopping creating sadness more than pleasure and feeling guilty purchasing a paper book when I could get it electronically.
Having left that little personal note, let me confirm now the Reading Kindle 2 really is by far the most thrilling personal purchase I have made in years and years and years. It has taken some getting used to and dealing with the resentment of losing the traditional book is still lingering but I just refer you back to paragraphs 2 & 3 in this review and confirm it is SOOOOOOOOOO utterly worth every single penny spent. I recommend the purchase of a light and cover along with a stand for those of you who move about while reading.
